The former Head of the Span ish Riding School and the Federal Stud Farm of Piber from 1985 to 2000 passed away suddenly on Saturday 23rd January 2016

HR Univ. Doz. Dr. Jaromir Oulehla, former Head of the Span ish Riding School and the Federal Stud Farm of Piber from 1985 to 2000, passed away in Austria at the age of 73 on Saturday 23rd January from a heart attack.

Dr. Oulehla

Dr. Oulehla was the only person in the 440 year history of the breed who held the position of both Director of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna and the Federal Stud Farm Piber simultaneously.

Dr Oulehla is Hofrat University Doz. Dr. Jaromir Oulehla, a veterinary surgeon specialised in horses and breeding. Dr. Oulehla was born in Gross Meseritsch in the former Czechoslovakia on September 23rd 1943. After secondary school he attended the veterinary university in Brno. There he obtained his university degree in 1966, followed by Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. At the same time he commenced riding training.

Subsequently Dr. Oulehla practiced as a Veterinarian in Jahlava Moravia. Then together with his wife and daughter, he moved to Vienna. There he lectured at the University of Vienna – first veterinary clinic which was involved in amongst other things, finding cures for certain internal diseases occurring in horses. His first contact with the Spanish Riding School and the Austrian Federal Stud Piber was at that time.

In 1983 after an Equine Influenza epidemic at the Piber stud Dr Oulehla was put in charge of rebuilding the Lipizzaner breed in Austria, and was appointed the director of the stud.

In 1985 he succeeded Brigadeer Kurt Albrecht as Director of the Spanish Riding School and in the following year Dr. Oulehla obtained the title of “Univ. Doz. (University Professor) in Veterinary Medicine”, with the Habilitation Thesis of “Breeding Standards in the Lipizzaner Horse Population”.

On the 31st January 2001 Dr. Oulehla retired from the postion of Director of the Spanish Riding School and the Piber Stud Farm.

Over the years he has been a horse breeding consultant in France and the Czech Republic, as well as a judge of breeding horses in the USA, South Africa, Canada, and Australia.

All of us involved with the Lipizzaner horse are grateful for everything he did for the preservation of the Lipizzaner breed. Our thoughts and sympathy are with his family
